Tragedy strikes Chicago Bears family, Gaines Adams dead at 26

Horribly tragic news broke this morning around the city of Chicago as word came that 26-year-old defensive end Gaines Adams died from cardiac arrest.  Adams was taken to the hospital in his home town of Greenwood South Carolina this morning by ambulance after police received a 911 call.

Upon their arrival at the hospital Adams was pronounced from what initial reports are stating cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart.

Adams was drafted fourth overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2007 and then traded mid-season 2009 to the Chicago Bears for a second round draft pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

Adams appeared in 10 games with the Bears in mostly a back up role, but was expected to have a big off-season and compete for a starting role in 2010.

He was the player the Bears were intent on building their pass rush around with defensive line coach Rod Marinelli lobbying hard for Adams.

The tragic news strikes hard for the team after a very long and hard season in which expectations were not met.  That failure of a season, now pales in comparison with this tragic turn of events for the Bears organization.

A full autopsy will be performed on Adams with blood toxicology reports to come in the next two to three months.
