Reports have already surfaced that current USC offensive coordinator and former Denver Broncos QB coach Jeremy Bates will follow Pete Carroll to Seattle to be their offensive coordinator.
Talk had been that Bates was set to interview with the Bears on Tuesday and that Carroll was making overtures to current UCLA and former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow, but it appears certain now that Bates is no longer an option for Bears.
The reports state that Bates in part is headed to Seattle because of the long term job security there is in Seattle. Lovie Smith in Chicago faces a one and done scenario in which he has to make the playoffs or face a near certain termination of the last year of his contract in Chicago.
The Bears will now likely move on to other options which could now include talks with current Green Bay Packers' QB coach Tom Clements. Clements who is under contract could not be contacted by the Bears because the Packers' season was not over. With the Packers being eliminated from playoff contention tonight by the Arizona Cardinals, hopefully the Bears can make their move.
My guess though with the uncertainty that Lovie Smith faces there won't be a lot of coaches like Clements who want to take up a one year challenge to fix what is wrong with Jay Cutler and the Bears.
Possibly the candidate most likely to be hired by the Bears who would take on the challenge would be long time friend of Smith from their days together in St. Louis Mike Martz. Based on the situation and the relationship, Martz makes the most sense for the Bears.
There is however no reason to just hand Martz the job outright as the Bears haven't even begun the interview process with any of their potential offensive coordinator candidates. Until the Bears actually complete an interview, speculation will likely still surround the six remaining candidates that have been talked about at Halas Hall.
