Devin Hester Will Shock the NFL

No one in their right mind will project Devin Hester as a number one receiver, much less a top-15 production level receiver in the NFL in 2009.  Hester didn't show any ability in 2008 to be a number one receiver and most Bears faithful brush off Lovie Smith when he proclaims Devin Hester will be a number one receiver in more than just name alone.

However I'm here to tell you that Devin Hester will have a good season as the Bears' number one receiver and he will be productive at a level that will be pretty damn impressive by the NFL standards of 2008.  Why am I willing to put Hester out there on such a lofty pedestal?  Besides the obvious notion that Hester will be more productive with Jay Cutler as the QB, I'm looking at Hester's last six games of the 2008 season.

This is my measuring point for Hester's season and I feel that this will be his break through year.  The year where everything clicks and Hester maintains a consistent enough level of production that will be very good by most fans' standards.

Devin Hester will have over 80 receptions, over 1,000-yards receiving and around nine touchdowns.  All production levels that put him at or near the top-10 receiving level production for players in 2008.  Pretty exciting when you think about it and a level of production that will surpass any player the Bears could have picked up in free agency for fair market value, and gotten their money's worth out of the contract.

During the last six games of 2008 Devin Hester caught 25 passes for 347 yards and an average of 13.6 yards per catch.  Numbers he put up with Kyle Orton hobbling around on a bad ankle, and with the Bears squarely in the race for the NFC playoffs.  There was no garbage time in Hester's performance, over those final six games he proved that he was more than capable of being productive when it mattered most and with his QB's overall play dropping off.

Granted these projections I'm making aren't astronomical projections, but when you consider Brandon Marshall's production at 1,265 yards receiving last year the reality of the situation begins to set in.  Hester IS in fact capable being a more than acceptable number one receiver and his production under Jay Cutler likely will reflect that.  Given the lack of a receiver with over 1,000-yards receiving in the last decade in Chicago, over 1,000 yards would be a welcome site, hooking up with Cutler makes 1,265 yards seem even more attainable which could put Hester squarely in the running for a Pro Bowl nod.

Projecting Hester's numbers over the final six games of 2008 you find that had he kept up that consistency he would have caught 64 balls and had 924 yards receiving.  If you take Hester's six best games where he achieved the most receptions combined over 2008 and project it out over 16 games he would have caught 80 balls for 1,264 yards.  A yard shy of Brandon Marshall's total in 2008.

I believe in Devin Hester, not in a Kool-Aid drinking over the top way, but in a way that bares out simple facts of what Hester should be capable of as an NFL receiver.  Given the circumstances, Hester's development, his natural talent and the fact that he has a solid running game behind him,  Hester's numbers will by most standards explode.

Hard as it may seem to most everyone in the NFL, Devin Hester will be among the best receivers in the NFL in 2009 and simple facts point to this argument.
