Bears linebacker Jamar Williams was drafted to potentially be Lance Briggs' replacement in case the Bears lost Briggs via free agency. That never materialized so Williams has become a permanent fixture of the Bears' bench and special teams. Williams has been a constant recipient of praise from the coaching staff, however when the time has come for him to take over a starting role he has never been the first player off the bench.
Williams had the opportunity to come out and win the strong side starting linebacker job, but the Bears decided to go with a free agency signee in Pisa Tiniosamoa. Tiniosamoa was injured during the first game of the season and Nick Roach was first off the bench to replace him. Brian Urlacher as well, injured in the first game and replaced by Hunter Hillenmeyer.
So the question becomes why the guy who is constantly said to be the first back up at all three linebacker positions actually the third linebacker off the bench?
This question may not be answered as it seems to be the furthest thing from the minds of Bears fans. So the question should then be what value does Williams have on this team other than special teams? That answer seems to be not much given that Williams will make only his second start of his career for the Bears against the Lions.
Williams has never managed to fit into any one role on the team. He's not the best back up linebacker at any of the three positions. He didn't start at the SAM spot last year when Hillengmeyer went down. He didn't come off the bench when Urlacher went down.
So now the question may be is he a liability when playing? That's a major question Williams may have to answer if Hunter Hillenmeyer is out for any length of time.
