These are the types of games that will drive Bears fans absolutely nuts. Perhaps we need to feel like this given that we've made Seahawks and Steelers fans have felt like this this season. Playing well enough to win a game, but allowing stupid mistakes to ultimately cost you a victory.
This happened for the Chicago Bears today as they ventured into the red-zone four times today and came away empty handed all four times. Turnovers, penalties and mistakes ultimately cost the Bears a game they should have won, quite possibly even dominated.
The Bears out gained the Falcons 373 to 253 yards with Michael Turner only able to muster 30 yards on the ground and Matt Ryan only able to muster 185-yards on the ground. The Bears' defense was up to the task all night slowing down what is normally considered a potent Falcons offensive attack. The defense got just enough pressure in Ryan's face and had good coverage most of the night.
Were it not for losing the turnover battle the Bears would have easily have won this game likely dominated this game. They left points on the field that could have put the Bears up over 35-points in this game.
However the same old thing seemed to crop up in this game, that was no ability to run the ball behind this atrocious run blocking offensive line. One of Omiyale's missed blocks led directly to one of Forte's fumbles in the game. Orlando Pace though went up against one of his toughest defenders of the season and more than held his own. Pace showed time and again that he has some pass blocking left in the tank mugging and burying Abraham on more than one occasion as he tried to get to Cutler.
On the flip side Chris Williams also held up well in pass protection showing yet again that he is getting better and better with each passing game. Even when the Bears ran the ball Williams showed that he is developing better as a run blocker.
A tough loss to swallow, but many positives overall to take away from this loss. If the defense plays like it did tonight throughout the season, the Bears will win more games than they lose and put themselves squarely in the hunt for the playoffs.
