The best way for the Chicago Bear to guarantee themselves a spot in the NFL playoffs is to win the NFC North. The best way to advance into the playoffs is to ensure a playoff game at home in January. The likelihood the 2009 Chicago Bears will win the NFC North has already gone out the window.
Why after only six games for the Vikings and five games for the Bears am I making such a ridiculous statement?
The answer is simple I'm looking at how good of a team the Vikings are, and who they have on the remainder of their schedule. Now granted any team in the NFL can win a game on any given Sunday and the season is not even half over yet. Thing is the Vikings play a very favorable schedule the rest of the way.
The Vikings' remaining schedule is the following (not including their bye week) @Pittsburgh, @Green Bay, three straight at home against the Lions, Seahawks and Bears, @ Arizona, home against the Bengals, @ Carolina @ Chicago, Home against the NY Giants.
So the Vikings are already clearly in the driver's seat for the NFC North title by virture of their two game lead. The Bears are facing an uphill battle with a series of must win games ahead of them before they face the Vikings. The Bears' record should not be worse than 8-4 when they face the Vikings. The Vikings on the other hand need to have two losses by the time they face the Bears and then the Bears have to sweep the season series with their main division challenger to this point.
Based on the outlook I foresee the Vikings could very well lose their next two games, at Pittsburgh and at Green Bay. However I'm not sure the Bears can lose only one more game the rest of the season and sweep the Vikings. Asking the Bears to win on the road in Minnesota is a tall order given the Bears' recent road record history.
The Bears are 3-7 in their last 10 road games and as much as Bears fans may be in denial about how good the Vikings are, the fact remains they are likely to win 12 games this season. Adding to it the Bears are an abysmal 2-7 in their last nine games in Minnesota since the beginning of the decade.
So the Bears are going to have to do a lot to buck history if they're to have a chance to win the NFC North already down two games in the division.
I'm not quite sure the sense of urgency has struck the coaching staff, perhaps not even the regular fan. 2009 has already been very unkind to our Chicago Bears and it looks like the only way the Bears have as shot at making the playoffs is by focusing their efforts on beating Green Bay and knocking off the Eagles who are a team likely to push for a wild card spot this year.
One thing is for certain the Bears need to start playing with a sense of urgency already a mere five games into the season, winning on the road this weekend is the first priority followed by going undefeated in the division for the rest of the season to have any hope at all of winning the NFC North.
