Bears Sign Cutler To Two-Year Contract Extension

All the speculation today  was what would the Chicago Bears do about potentially trading for a receiver, or a linebacker with Pisa Tiniosamoa likely out with knee problems again.  The trading deadline came and went with the Bears not making any move of any significance, or Jay Cutlerso it seemed.

The big news comes in the form of a very cost efficient contract extension for quarterback Jay Cutler.  The Bears are giving Cutler a two-year extension worth $30-million-dollars with $20-million of that guaranteed.  With the new extension Cutler is guaranteed to be the Bears' QB through the 2013 season and will hit free agency at what is considered the prime part of a quarterback's career.

The deal also means the Bears can spread out the guaranteed money over the life of the rest of his current contract, giving Cutler more money this year and throughout the life of the deal.  This makes it what should be a very salary cap friendly deal once a new collective bargaining agreement is reached.

This gives the Bears added flexibility without having to give Cutler the type of money commanded recently by Phillip Rivers and Eli Manning.  The flip side is if Cutler wins as much as Bears fans hope he does, Cutler will be set to make even more money later on down the line with still plenty of football left in his career.

This is another strike of Angelo genius because if for any reason Cutler falters the Bears maintain a lot of flexibility without incurring dead weight onto the salary cap.

Cutler as a player has already added another missing dimension to the Bears' offense and if he's able to take the Bears to the playoffs this year and in years following will be a bargain in the eyes of most fans.
