Things don't get any easier for Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears offense this upcoming Sunday night versus the Philadelphia Eagles. Fresh off his career high five interception day against the San Francisco 49ers Jay Cutler and the Bears face a team that will take full advantage of bad decisions and mistakes. The Eagles currently rank third in the league in sacks meaning they will be blitzing and attacking Cutler from all angles.
Cutler will have to deal with exotic blitz packages, hidden coverages and different looks all in an effort to confuse him and get him to commit mistakes. He will have to prove in an instant that he's learned from his mistakes from the previous week.
The Eagles' defense is also third in the league in interceptions, meaning their blitzing scheme always leads to turnovers. Cutler knows this much, he won't get much pass protection, he won't get help from the running game, but if for any reason he is able to get help from his defense and they keep the game close he needs to not make mistakes.
Cutler needs to make plays, go into game manager mode if necessary because taking risks when the score is in the 10-points or less column risky throws can cost Bears a chance at a win. We've already seen precisely what can happen when Cutler makes poor decisions, so this week again in primetime, late night coverage the spot light will be on the Bears' QB.
The Bears on defense will also face a great deal of pressure in keeping the Eagles out of the end zone. The Eagles are fifth in the NFL in total points scored meaning they can score points in bunches and in a hurry. The Eagles will be looking to exact a bit of revenge from last year's loss.
Chicago was able to keep the Eagles out of the end-zone on a goal line stand that would have given the Eagles the win. Instead Alex Brown and company stood up strong at the point of attack and kept the Eagles out on fourth down and goal.
But I have to be honest in this game evaluation, this is a game that sets up as another one of those physical ass whipping type games the Bears have received twice already this year. The Eagles are a far more talented and better coached team, Donovan McNabb is scrambling better than he has at any point in the last couple years and he has more weapons at his disposal.
The likelihood that the Bears will be able to keep up the Eagles is slim to none and I don't think there is anyway the Bears have a chance in this game. The Eagles are fighting for their playoff lives and based on the type of team they line up are the perfect storm of a team to kick the Bears' ass.
I don't suspect Cutler will take care of the football and the pressure from all the blitzes he has yet to recognize this season will force him into turnovers. The pressure on Cutler to step up and lead this team to some sort of victory and to keep the Bears in the playoff race will prove too much for the fourth year signal caller.
