The Bears win a game against Cleveland and the offense takes a beating, the Bears lose a game and the defense takes that same beating. Against the Browns the Bears' offense couldn't get the ball moving and were stagnant throughout most of the game. There was little success in the way the Bears executed their offense and it showed.
Flash forward one week and the offense took off under Jay Cutler. Cutler threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns all going to TE Greg Olsen who had yet to get on track this season. Cutler's total was the seventh most passing yards in Chicago Bears history and the way he spread the ball around to his receivers was also impressive.
Cutler took advantage of all four of his main weapons in the passing game, starters Earl Bennett and Devin Hester each had over 90-yards receiving a piece. While Greg Olsen and Matt Forte each added over 70-yards receiving of their own showing a high level of consistency in their ability to get open and make plays.
The first drive of the game was arguably one of Cutler's best drives of the season. On the first drive of the game Cutler was six for seven for 90 yards and a 33-yard touchdown to Greg Olsen capped the drive. Getting Olsen involved in the offense early and with catches that really stretched the defense was a good sign.
Yes unfortunately the defense didn't hold up their end of the bargain so we may not truly know exactly how good the game good have been for the offense, but there is hope for the future.
This Thursday against the 49ers the Bears face the 19th ranked defense in the NFL in terms of total yards allowed. A pretty mediocre defense so there will be opportunities to score on them. The key for the Bears will be to take advantage of playing a defense that isn't one of the top defenses in the league. The offense needs to be effective, needs to come in fired up and ready to play because the 49ers are a well disciplined team.
The 49ers are the type of team that aren't going to beat themselves they're going to make you come out and play your best football to beat them. This is the question that the Bears face this week, can they come out and be as focused and ready to play as the 49ers will be under Coach Singletary.
The 49ers' record is a result of their lack of talent not their lack of effort or focus. Their failures on the season are opposite of the Bears' failures by 180-degrees in that the Bears have the talent but haven't been giving consistent effort on a weekly basis.
This game early this week is the defining game of the season to see if the Bears can in fact bounce back and match the intensity, focus and execution of their opponents.
