Jay Cutler Is the Only One Who Can Change In '09

Jay CutlerThere are a lot of problems that are keeping the Chicago Bears from winning in 2009 and likely keeping them from making the playoffs for a third straight season.  Most Chicago Bears fans have long ago recognized the main problems that are keeping this team from being competitive.

The offensive line, point blank is one of the worst O-Lines in the NFL right now.  They don't muster much in the way of run blocking and the pass protection seems to get worse by the week.  Cutler is often times running for his life and doesn't have as much time to throw as you'd like to give a QB of his immense talent.

Since the Bears can't do much to change the current structure of the offensive line until the off-season, it's a safe bet that the lack of a running game and an inability to protect Cutler will cost the Bears another victory at some point.  My guess would be this Sunday night's game against the Eagles will be the one that really shows just how bad the O-Line is.  The Eagles love to blitz and blitz a lot from all angles of the field and they do it as well as any team in the NFL.

Jay CutlerBears fans will likely have to suck up the fact that Cutler won't have time to throw nor will he have much of a running game from Matt Forte.

On defense nothing will change much there for the better, the D-Line will struggle to get pressure with the same old broken down players and we know for certain Tommie Harris' knee won't miraculously heal.  The injuries to Urlacher and  Tiniosamoa are already season ending so that won't change either.

The Bears are who we see, with one thing that has to change to help the Bears win games.  That change has to come from the quarterback position and Jay Cutler.  Jay Cutler has been personally responsible for three losses this season, that's the simple way to put it.

The 49ers game Cutler threw five interceptions, he could have thrown eight interceptions in the game with the decisions he made with the football.  This isn't me venting anger at Cutler, it's the simple fact of what watching the tape revealed with some of the balls he threw.

Yes Devin Hester slipped and bumped into the referee, yes Kellen Davis it could arguably be said was interfered with.  The three throws Cutler did make that were not picked off were stupid, careless decisions.  The careless decisions are what have to stop, and if he does quit making poor decisions there are some possible chances that the Bears will win games you wouldn't otherwise think they wouldn't.

This is what we do know, three games in which Cutler has made poor decisions has led to three losses, switch those three losses into wins and the Bears are still squarely in the hunt for the NFC North and the playoffs.  7-2 is the record should have based on the play that the defense has mustered up in the games in which Cutler has made those poor decisions.

Nothing is quite as easy to change on this Bears team as Jay Cutler's ability to protect the football.  Hopefully Cutler can recognize this and do more to take care of the football this season.  He needs to show that he can do more to win games rather than lose games.  Cutler needs to prove that he can learn from his mistakes and not cost his team victories that it so desperately needs.
