Alex Brown Attempts To Provide Answers

The uproar last week was firmly at the feet of Ron Turner after the offense struggled to find a rhythm.  This week it's the defense that is taking the heat and rightfully so.  The last time the Bears gave up 40 points on defense twice in one season was in Dave Wannstedt's second year.  1994 was the year that the Bears felt the brunt of Dave Wannstedt's stupid personnel decisions and it only began to mushroom from there.

No 2009 is nothing like the 1994 team because the 2009 team was rebuilt after Richard Dent and Steve McMichael were let go.  This team has talent up front, even beyond the disappointing Tommie Harris there should be enough talent on this team to win football games.

The heart and soul of the defense right now is on the defensive and it's long overdue that Alex Brown is made a captain of the defense.  Brown is way more accountable and far more motivated to fix this team than Ogunleye will ever be.  Brown has never been a disappointment, Ogunleye has been nothing but.

Brown after the game Sunday even put blame on himself for missing tackles on the RB in the backfield that would have otherwise gone for a loss.   He didn't shy away from criticism, didn't try to sugar coat things he spoke bluntly and was nothing short of brutally honest about the defense.

Brown's statements after the game lend get credence to his demand for accountability for his defense.

"I don't know what the hell is wrong, but we got to change it," a . "This is the eighth game of the season. I know a lot of people would like to believe we're better than 4-4, but our record is 4-4. That's what we are."Alex Brown

Brown went even further when he stated that Bears fans need not blame the coaches, but blame the players.  He's right on that point too as the coaches have made good calls, but the players haven't been able to stop anyone.

"Don't blame the coaches, Brown stated, Blame him, blame the players.

"We've got to tackle, we've got to cover, we've got to get off blocks," he said. "We've got to do that. That's us. Everybody talks about the coaches. No, it's us, us as players. We've got to get off blocks, we've got to make plays. We're not doing that. I know of a lot of people say it, but right now we're not going out [and] earning our paychecks."

It looks a lot like the same lackadaisical effort we saw as the season wore on last season.  The question is will this year be any different?  Can Brown be the front man the leader he seems born to be and get something out of  his players?

At this point it would seem best for the Bears to call a player's only meaning and see who among them is willing to step up and be that leader.  Who among this defense can step up and challenge this team to get the talent to produce on the level it's capable of.

The Bears have eight games left to the season and somehow if they still believe they are capable of making the playoffs, it needs to start against the 49ers.

Right now I trust Alex Brown will do what it takes to fix his job and be more productive on his end.  The rest of the defense though, no one plays like Brown does.  No one tries as hard as he does and wants to win as much as he does.

Alex Brown has a lot of heart, and hopefully it's enough heart to go around for the rest of defense.
