2008 Kyle Orton Provides Blue Print To Beat Eagles in 2009

The Philadelphia Eagles come to town in what is essentially a must win game for the Bears if they want to keep their mathematical playoff hopes alive.  Another Sunday night game in the Windy City against the Eagles provides the back drop for a game that most people don't think the Bears can pull off.

Kyle OrtonIronically the thoughts were the same in 2008 when the Kyle Orton led Chicago Bears beat the Eagles 24-20 during another Sunday night game.  Orton played one of his best games of 2008 in this game by playing within himself and not trying to make too many big throws.  His success offered a blue print for how the 2009 Chicago Bears should attack virtually the same Eagles defense from a year ago.

Jay Cutler and the Bears like the Orton led Bears from a year ago should bring out the no-huddle offense.  Slow down and wear out the Eagle defense by going no-huddle most of the game.  This was the same offensive strategy that worked for Orton and the Bears last year, and the proof is in Orton's three touchdown pass first half performance.

When the Bears went no-huddle in 2008 their offense moved the ball very efficiently against the Eagles.  The 2008 Bears also did this with no help from Matt Forte and the rushing attack.  In the 2008 game Forte was held to to a putrid 43-yards on 19-carries.

The Bears can replicate this same game plan against the blitz happy Eagles defense, it's the same strategy that the Chargers used to beat them last week.  The small difference is the Chargers mixed in some timely runs with the no-huddle to keep the Eagles' defense off balance.  The Chargers didn't win last week by lining up and smashing Ladanian Tomlinson ahead for three yards and a cloud of dust every time.  The Chargers went no huddle and then when the Eagles defense was getting worn out they would audible from a pass to a quick draw play and catch the Eagles in a blitz that would open up a lane for LT to run through.

Cutler and the Bears can use this same strategy against the Eagles.  Short quick efficient passes to Forte out of the backfield, Olsen down the seams or Hester and Bennett on the middle-outs of the field.  Methodically and efficiently taking their time to keep the Eagles from shifting their personnel around and gaining the advantage on defense.

Jay CutlerThe Bears don't need to try to make big plays down the field, much like Cutler did with the blitz happy Steelers in week two, he just needs to take what the defense gives him.  The Eagles will give a lot too because they will either be very blitz happy, or they will play zone.  If they go zone and only rush four and the front four is too tired from being in the no-huddle that's when the Bears can gain bigger chunks of yardage by sitting routes in the weak parts of the Eagles' banged up secondary. n

This also helps to keep the very explosive  Eagles offense off the field and watching from the side lines.  The Bears can win this game by winning time of possession and using their passing attack like a rushing attack.  Much like the old 49ers' offense's of old using the TEs and Matt Forte to attack the open areas of the defense where the blitzes are coming from will give the Bears chances to move the football.

The key of course will be for Cutler to play within himself.  He doesn't need to throw for over 300-yards to beat the Eagles, Orton for example threw for an efficient 199-yards in the 2008 victory.  Cutler doesn't need to force the ball, he doesn't need to panic when the Eagles come with a blitz.  He just needs to take advantage of the mismatches the Eagles' blitz can provide him with.

As I mentioned earlier this week this is the type of game in which the Bears could really damage themselves with stupid mistakes and turnovers.  That or they could play within themselves and show the same level of efficiency the game manager Kyle Orton did in 2008.
